Almost a year into the Covid-19 pandemic and cases of the coronavirus continue to surge. New variants of the virus have emerged that appear to spread from person to person more easily. Research suggested that widespread mask-wearing can curb infections and deaths and some experts are even recommending people to double up on masks.
The best masks are N95s, which are designed with ultrahigh filtration efficiency. Since the N95s are in short supply for health workers, who need them to safely treat patients, layering two less specialized masks on top of each other can provide better protection.
However, any and all face coverings are a critical tool in the fight against COVID-19, especially until a large part of the population is vaccinated. The CDC recommends that people wear masks in public settings, like on public and mass transportation, at events and gatherings, and anywhere they will be around other people.
