Do you need them specifically for blue light protection? Probably not. But if a product contains quality ingredients that address your skin concerns, it might be worth considering regardless of the blue light marketing angle.
What I don’t recommend is buying a product solely because it claims to protect against blue light, especially if it’s expensive and doesn’t offer other proven benefits.
What Should You Actually Do About It?
Think of blue light concerns like this: it’s a question worth asking, but it shouldn’t keep you up at night (ironically, the sleep disruption from late-night screen time is probably worse for your skin than the light itself).
Focus your energy on what we know works:
Wear broad-spectrum sunscreen every day. This is non-negotiable. Choose SPF 30 or higher and reapply if you’re spending extended time outdoors.
Use proven anti-aging ingredients. Retinoids, vitamin C, niacinamide, and peptides all have strong research backing their effectiveness.
Maintain a consistent routine. Cleanse, moisturize, and protect your skin barrier. The basics matter more than trendy add-ons.
Don’t skip annual skin checks. Early detection of skin cancer saves lives.
Consider antioxidants. Whether or not blue light is a significant concern, antioxidants help protect your skin from environmental stressors we know cause damage.
If you’re still concerned about screen time and your skin, there are simple steps: take regular breaks from devices, use night mode settings that reduce blue light in the evening, and maintain that consistent skincare routine we talked about.
The skincare industry will always have a new concern to address, and that’s not necessarily a bad thing—it drives research and innovation. But it’s important to distinguish between emerging science and established fact.
